- The Background
West Suffolk Hospital Nurses accommodation provides onsite accommodation for the nursing teams who work in the hospital.
Following refurbishment to the main roof of the hospital, a survey identified that the roof to the nursing block was not draining properly, was covered in moss due to years of neglect and suffered from persistent leaks, rendering it unsuitable for use.
We undertook the works with the objective of not only refurbishing the roof area but also solving the falls and bringing it up to current standards by adding new insulation.
We cleaned down the roof, applied a new AVCL, tapered insulation and high-performance PU liquid waterproofing system in grey.
- The Solution
The survey identified the presence of a RAAC deck, which meant that a detailed structural survey was required, especially given the planned addition of tapered insulation as part of the works. The survey identified that the deck could be suitably reinforced internally.
Additionally, the incorrect falls were clearly adding to the issues on the roof, so we designed a cut to fall scheme to resolve this.
Because of the shape of the roof, the tapered insulation was highly complex with multi-directional falls. This meant operatives had to work with care to ensure the tapered scheme worked in the way it was designed.
The roof also included several changes in level, SVP’s and upstands that required careful attention to ensure that the high standard of liquid application on the flat area, was replicated on the important details.
The end result for the client, was a brand-new roof with a 25-year guarantee which now drains correctly to outlets. Importantly, the nurses who use the residence are now housed in a modern and energy efficient building, whilst they carry out their important work.
